The earliest record traced is William Bozacott who married Joan Tredennick in Tetcott in Devon on the 11th October 1784. Both were living in Tetcott. The witnesses of the marriage were Thomas Lord and John More.

A son, William, was baptised in Tetcott on 10th April 1785. (it looks like he was either premature or more likely it was the equivalent of a shotgun wedding in 1784!). As explained later this William I believe changed his name to Bussicott when he joined the army aged 18 in February 1804.

The researcher who traced this marriage and the birth of William for me believed that William and Joan left Tetcott after 10th April 1785 and moved to St Davids Exeter where they had another son John who was baptised on 3rd June 1787. This son must have died and they had another son John who was baptised on 7th March 1790 at Dawlish in Devon.

We lose track of Bozacott but there are plenty of Bussacotts in the Barnstable area about 30 miles from Tetcott and we know that the Bussacott and Buzzacott name is common in the West Country.

In order to make this write up of the Bussicott family easier to follow it my help to show in summary the male members of the family up until 1901.

Excluding the original William Bozacott the four generations from the William born in 1785 look like this

Forebear of South African Family

There is a lack of sons being born, but as you can see later there are plenty of daughters. The advantage is it makes the family history simpler.

I have much information about both William and his four sons and their individual histories can be found below

William  the father born in Devon but who joined the army and eventually settled in London
William Richard  who only had girls but there is a story on two of them as they have been traced to the present day
•   John  who had as far as I can ascertain only had one son who died at 14. However see comments later about John, who was a soldier
•   James  who was the direct family relation of our family currently living in the UK, was also a soldier with his elder brother John
•   Frederick Thomas Duke  who was born nearly 20 years after William Richard and 10 years after James was the forbear of the family now living in South Africa

To explore what has so far been discovered on the four boys of the marriage as listed above please select the name above and this will lead to you the history
of this family through until 1901.

All the families lived in London but of course it is impossible to ascertain whether there was close contact between the families.
