Then they have another child
Christabel born in 1872.
Then
sometime in the 1870’s Eliza must have died as in the 1881 census James
Salter (a widower) is living as a lodger in 7 Grosvenor
Cottages in St Georges Hanover Square. He is still a
house decorator.
Alfred Salter at 16 has
presumably left home by 1881. However in the 1881 census
Ada now aged 13 and Christabel aged 9 are living with
Emma Hancock at 6 Wood Buildings Chelsea, who is
described as a charwoman. The two children are both
described as Nurse Child.
James Salter remarried to a
Mary Balaam in 1899.
In 1891 we know that Ada was
living at the home of a Mr Leigh working as a servant.
He was an attendant at the Natural History Museum.
As for Christabel at aged 18
in 1891 she was in a Girls Home – the Ealsham Howe
Memorial Home in Forest Rise.
Christine Wilmot has been in touch
via the Internet and she has traced Christabel as her
great grandmother. She says that Christabel met
Christine’s great grandfather Sidney and they married on 5th
February 1901. At the time of the marriage they were
living at Moss near Doncaster. Christabel and Sidney had
two children Dorothy (Dolly) and Gladys.
Christine has her family history on tribal
pages and a photograph of Christabel can be
found here
